An introduction

I'm Hannah. I'm 25, and I look a bit like this.

In short: clashing patterns, bright lipstick, relentless enthusiasm.

I'm in the first year of my Linguistics PhD at the University of Sheffield (details of which can be found here), via an MA in York, a BA in Lancaster and the previous 18 years in Stoke-on-Trent. Language is my one true love, very best friend, fire in my belly, etc. Sociophonetics, language and identity, language and prejudice, and phonetics and phonology more broadly are my bag, but I generally just love everything. I also write about it at length here.

I like television, and yell about it A LOT. Quiz shows, dumb sitcoms, quality drama, cookery shows and nature documentaries, mainly. Specifically (at the moment): Parks and Recreation, The Good Wife, Only Connect, Orange is the New Black, Star Trek: The Next Generation. I will read all the things, but sway towards non-fiction, and I have recently ventured into playing video games (very poorly).

Nearly all my disposable income goes on theatre tickets, trips to the zoo and train journeys; give me a sunny day and a good castle and I'm sorted. I'm a feminist; I get hand-wavy and passionate about that kind of stuff, and I love learning about it.

I eschew responsibility and being a grown up with a firm hand, instead enjoying eating breakfast at 4pm and climbing trees. I basically enjoy learning about anything, and love people who are enthusiastic about stuff, regardless of what it may be.
“I began to realise how important it was to be an enthusiast in life. He taught me that if you are interested in something, no matter what it is, go at it full speed ahead. Embrace it with both arms, hug it, love it and above all become passionate about it. Lukewarm is no good. Hot is no good, either. White hot and passionate is the only thing to be.”
Roald Dahl, My Uncle Oswald
